How to Create an Age Verification in WordPress

Do you need to verify your visitor’s age to grant him/her access to your website? Some websites are not for everyone and having minors view the content of some websites is wrong. To get around this, a warning message has been used to verify if a visitor is the correct age. Unfortunately, this probably won’t stop anyone because the visitor can lie without penalty.

This is why many websites will not bother adding age verification and depending on the nature of the website, the name should be enough of a tip-off. As a website developer, you have no way of knowing who is on the other side of the computer monitor. Today, I will demonstrate how to create an age verification in WordPress using the Easy Age Verifier plugin.

Why Should You Add an Age Verification on Your Website

Age verification is not necessary for every website. If you have mature or explicit content on your website or sell alcoholic beverages, an age verification is probably a good idea. This is especially true if your content is related to something that minors may search for, like cartoons and other animated characters. For example, imagine a taphouse or bar’s website, they will definitely be showcasing what beers, brews, and drinks they offer.

The legal drinking age in the United States is 21 and that would be the perfect age verification for the website. Of course, the age is different depending on the nature of the website. In most cases, 18 is enough in the United States. Be aware of different age restrictions in different countries. For example, Canada has a drinking law of 19 in most of its provinces.

How to Create an Age Verification in WordPress

Today, I will demonstrate how to create an age verification in WordPress using the Easy Age Verifier plugin. This plugin is designed to have a visitor confirm their age before entering the website. You can adjust the age to meet your website’s needs. It will use a month, day, year format to enter the age or a button alternative. The visitor will have to verify their age every time they open their web browser, but if they close the tab and reopen it, no additional verification will be required. This plugin will also allow search engine bots to pass through without issue, so it will not hurt your website’s SEO.

Easy Age Verifier Plugin

Start off by clicking on Plugins and selecting the Add New option on the left-hand admin panel.

Search for Easy Age Verifier in the available search box. This will pull up additional plugins that you may find helpful.

Search for Easy Age Verifier in the available search box.

Scroll down until you find the Easy Age Verifier plugin and click the «Install Now» button and activate the plugin for use.

click the "Install Now" button

On the left-hand admin panel click on Age Verifier. This will pull up the main settings page of the plugin.

On the left-hand admin panel click on Age Verifier.

Here you can adjust every aspect of the verifier. The first checkbox will allow you to actually see the age verifier while editing. I would recommend checking the box so you can see how the changes affect it. The second box will allow visitors who have logged in to avoid having to verify their age again. This will definitely make your registered users happy.

The next text box allows you to input the required age for your website. The box afterwards will allow you to provide a message for visitors who do not meet the age requirement. You can also change the title of the age verifier, but try to keep it professional. If it does not sound professional more people will be less likely to give a real age.

The Form Type is the most important part of the settings. You can choose between having them enter their date of birth or to click a button. Since in either cases visitors can lie, I would recommend the button option. This is more convenient for everyone. If you picked the button display, you will need to pick what the button says. Click on the «Publish» button once you have made your selections.

Click on the "Publish" button

You can now visit your website to see the age verifier in action. If you do not see anything, it may be caused by a bug. To fix it go back into the settings and manually enter the minimum age. If you left it at the default 21 it may not actually register the age for some reason. Even if 21 is your desired minimum age, just re-enter it. Also, remember you need to close your web browser to see the message again.

Visit Your Website

Congratulations, you have successfully created an age verification for your WordPress website. Remember not every website needs one and many do not. The verification will not stop anyone from entering your website because in either case, it is easy to enter a fake age or click on the button. The idea is to give a warning or to hopefully grab a parent’s attention before a child enters somewhere they don’t belong.

Decide What Age Group Your Website is For

In most cases, it is pretty clear what age group your website is for when you deal with mature and explicit content. The problem is trying to keep minors out and not impact regular visitors. A simple button click is not too much trouble and at least shows that you’ve tried. Remember, it’s not your fault if someone is visiting your website who shouldn’t, but it doesn’t make it right either.

What age have you picked as the minimum? Why have you picked that particular age?
